If the gas was syphoned back into the underground tanks you would be paying for pumped air into your car gas tank for the first few seconds. I say this because the second you squeeze the gas lever and begin pumping gas it immediately begins to charge you (usually jumping to 3 cents upon the initial squeeze). The gas, indeed, does remain in the tube and is not syphoned down to the gas tank below. When the gas nozzle is shut off it forms a seal ( nothings goes out, nothing goes in), once this seal is made gas cannot fall back down into the tank unless there was a vent hole somewhere else, which wouldn't make too much sense as the expensive gas would slowly evaporate out the vent hole. That is my take on this debate. It makes the most sense to me, however, gas stations may do different things with their pumps. The way I see it, we get screwed either way :-) Ian
